A drain that keeps clogging usually has buildup the last fix didn’t remove, such as grease, soap scum or hair coating the pipe walls, or an underlying pipe problem such as roots, a sag, corrosion or a blockage further down the main line. If more than one drain is slow, the main line is the likely cause.
The most common causes by room
| Drain | Usual culprits |
|---|---|
| Kitchen sink | Grease and oil, starches (rice, pasta), coffee grounds, food waste through the disposal |
| Bathroom sink | Hair, toothpaste, soap residue, debris caught on the pop-up stopper |
| Shower and tub | Hair combined with soap scum |
| Toilet | Too much paper, wipes, hygiene products, low-flow performance issues |
| Laundry | Lint, especially from washers without lint filters |
| Several drains at once | Main line blockage: roots, grease, wipes, a sag or broken pipe |
Why clogs come back
The clog was only partly cleared
Plunging or a small hand snake can punch a hole through a blockage without removing the buildup coating the pipe. Water flows again for a while, then the line narrows and clogs again.
Grease coats kitchen lines
Grease goes down as a liquid and hardens as it cools, building a sticky layer that traps food particles. Kitchen lines are the most common repeat offenders, which is why hydro jetting is often recommended for them.
Old pipes have rough interiors
Older cast iron drains, found in many Boca Raton homes built before the mid-1970s, can corrode and scale on the inside, giving debris more to cling to.
Roots, sags and breaks
Roots entering joints, a section of pipe that has settled into a low spot (a “belly”), or a cracked line will keep catching waste no matter how often the drain is cleaned. A camera inspection shows these clearly.
Venting problems
Drains need air from the vent system to flow properly. A blocked roof vent can cause slow drains and gurgling.
How to prevent recurring clogs
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel and put oil in the trash, not the sink
- Use hair catchers in showers and tubs
- Run plenty of cold water when using the garbage disposal, and avoid fibrous and starchy scraps
- Don’t flush wipes, even ones labeled flushable
- Avoid repeated chemical drain cleaners, which can damage pipes
- Know where your cleanout is so a plumber can access the main line quickly
When to call a plumber
Call when a clog comes back within weeks, when more than one fixture is slow, when you hear gurgling, or when sewage or odors appear. A plumber can clear the line fully, often with professional drain cleaning or hydro jetting, and use a camera to see whether sewer line repair is needed. Kitchen clogs linked to the disposal are covered on our garbage disposal page.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my drain clog again right after it was cleared?
The buildup lining the pipe wasn’t fully removed, or there’s an underlying problem such as roots, a sag or corrosion. A camera inspection can find the cause.
Do enzyme drain cleaners work?
Enzyme or bacterial products can help with light organic buildup over time as maintenance, but they won’t clear a full clog or fix a pipe problem.
Why are my drains gurgling?
Gurgling often means air is being pulled through water traps because of a partial blockage or a vent problem. If multiple drains gurgle, have the main line checked.
Is hydro jetting better than snaking?
Jetting cleans the full pipe wall and is better for grease and sludge; snaking is effective for localized clogs. The right method depends on the pipe’s condition.
